The workshop was based on the notions of toxicity and danger and was designed to explore these concepts through smell. In the first part, the students smelled 20 plant extracts (plant sap diluted with water only) and had to decide whether they liked the smell and whether they thought the plant was poisonous. In the final evaluation, they assessed to what extent their aesthetic judgment of the odours could help them avoid intoxication.
The second part of the workshop gave students an opportunity to experiment with DIY methods of smell preservation and collection.
The last activity of the day involved learning the process of distillation. For homework, students were asked to bring an item that carries a human smell. We combined all the items they brought in an attempt to create an essence of human scent.
